TOPIC: DO YOU LOVE ME?

TEXT: John 21:15-19

15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. 16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. 17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. 19 This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

INTRODUCTION TEXT

Jesus asked Peter three times whether he really loved Him; to the point that Peter became angry at the repeated questions. In any case, there was a serious burden in the heart of the Master - who would shepherd the flock He was leaving behind? Peter had in a couple of hours earlier failed the acid test: He had led the people back to fishing.
Jesus knew that wherever our affection is, our commitment must as a matter of fact, be there. Love for Him would change our worldview so also love for the world would estrange us from Him. Our commitment to obeying God's word, contending for the faith, being at the post of service and loving other brethren are all directly related to the amount of love for Jesus that has consumed our hearts.

It is important to note that this type of love is borne out of experiential knowledge of His personality. We must have heard Him, seen His glory with our eyes, looked upon His mercies and handled His benevolence, to enter this realm of love (1 John 1:1). And no man climbs this height of sublime love and denies His Master the desired undivided attention.

Prayer: Help me to love you dearest Lord, because thou art my God and my most loving King.
