5TH SUNDAY IN LENT   APRIL 3 2022. 2022 Anglican Bible Study - Study 14 (TOPIC: God of History).

THEME: THE LORD GOD AND THE REIGN OF PEACE

SUB-THEME: Christian’s Knowledge of God

TOPIC: God of History

TEXT: Josh.24:1-15

AIMS:

i.  to exposit the reasons God keeps historical records and then

ii. to challenge us to amend our ways so we can escape on the day of reckoning.

INTRODUCTION

History is the study and interpretation of past events, particularly as it concerns human affairs. That God is a historical Being who does not forget is clear in scripture. He has an accurate record of events and happenings as they unfold. He called certain people to put in record events that became the history of the Israelites. Hence, we have books like the first and second Kings and Chronicles. Through Joshua, He reminded Israel of how they came to be where they were (Jos.24:1-15).

STUDY GUIDE

1. How does our key text (Jos 24:1-15) help in understanding God as the God of History? See also Matt. 25:34-45;

2. Why does God keep historical records?Exo.17:14; Rom 15:4; Eccle 12:14; Rev. 20:11-13.

3. What should be our response to this God who keeps accurate historical accounts? Josh 24:13-14; Psalm 95:7-11; Eph. 5:15.

4. What is the value of Recordkeeping and how may we improve on our record-keeping habit in the Church today? Read Luk 1:1-4.

CONCLUSION

As a Church of God, we must rise up to the challenge of keeping accurate historical records because our God is a God of history. No one should be ignorant of the fact that eventually, God will reveal all our actions, whether good or evil. What shall be the record of my earthly sojourn when revealed; will it be good or bad?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: You can’t escape the records; either in the good or bad book.

MEMORY VERSE: Rev 20:12 – “And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books”.
