TEXT: Matthew 25:14-30

Reading Passage:

14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.

19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.

20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:

25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.

26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:

27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.

28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.

29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The words; "Be yea a faithful steward" is a lesson drawn out from a story Jesus told his followers from the passage we read above. Some people always think the advice or the admonition is for the workers in the Churches or the Priests and the Pastors.

It is not so. Every child of God is a ministers and steward in one way or the other. The point of focus we want to look into is a form of a question. "Are you a faithful steward. It is assumed that something prompted this question. Looking at this topic, the only thing that prompted this question is within the sentence. This is a question desiring answers. We are not going straight to the answers without laying preambles to the topic.

There is need to define some important keywords to be able to drive home our points. Let's look at the "Servant and Steward".

*Servants/Steward:

 There is no other better definition of a servant as it concerns us other than ‘a person employed in the service of a government. Call it teaching, lecturing, nurse, accountant, principal. We are all servants to whomever that employs us. 

What about steward? In a layman understanding, we see a steward as someone who is under a master working and learning a skill. There is no difference between these two keywords. Both are under someone, working under the dictate of the person. 

Servantship or stewardship is not a degrading title. Some are offended on this word servant. Let us see Matt. 20:28, good service to humanity is a service to God. See that man in Luke 7:5, the centurion servant (rich, yet with a servant title. It was his service to humanity that attracted his miracles to him. Look at servant Dorcas, the widow’s servant.

*Faithful servant: 

The only difference between a servant and a faithful servant is how the tasks assigned to them are been carried out. Joseph was a servant in the house of Portifer. He wasn't ans ordinary servant, he was a faithful servant.

Most of the servants we have today bear the title servants without the adjectival attachment which is what Christ requires of us. But some have become wolves. They are devouring the Lamb entrusted in their hands. The difference between a servant and a faithful servant is in Matt. 25:14-30; The parable of the talents. After all, how much are they paying me? No one is worth dying for. Remember too that we were nobody but Christ volunteered to die for us.

Who is a Faithful Servant/ Steward?

The following are the features of a faithful servant:

First of all, a steward is a learner. In the service of God, everyone is a servant. We keep serving and working until the Master returns.

A steward or servant knows he has an employer. he is accountable to a higher authority. For we we to discharge our duties diligently, we must posses the following  qualities:

• We must a disciple - always ready to learn at the Master's feet.
• We must be self-discipline and able to dodge temptations.
• We must walk with God, hear His words, obey and take instructions from Him just like Abraham did.
• We must always do the master's bidding.
• Allows the Master's ideology to swallow ours.
• Always royal and reliable
• have confidence in the master.
• Be conscious of the return of the Master.

Reasons why we must be faithful servants 

(1)    For accountability (John 17:12):

 Because we must give account of our life at the end. At this point in John 17:12, Jesus was given account of His earthly ministry to His father. On the last day, we shall account for the son of perdition, the effort we made to revive his life.

We shall account for the talents given to us by God to work for Him and to serve humanity. It is very necessary to be a faithful servant because the master we are working for whom we are going give account of our services here on earth does not tale side. he is a righteous judge whom will reward everyone according the work we rendered to Him.

2. For Whom we say We are: Heb 12:12

If we confess that Christ authors our faith, it is expected that our lifestyles xtrays the true life of Jesus. Jesus is the faithful and the righteous Judge. If we claim we belong to Jesus, the attributes of our owner should reflect in us. For we are the written epistle (2 Corinthians 3:2) ; we must be faithful in our services for people are looking and learning from us.

3. For the Divine Salute Matt 25:23:

We must be faithful servants to receive the golden salute at the last day; at the Master's return. Remember where we read in the passage, the servant who did well, received a salute from the Master and was rewarded.

I am expecting a handshake from the Master whom I am working for. Therefore, I must be faithful. I must be diligent in discharging all my duties whether anyone is looking or not.

4. For more Auction to Function  Matt 25: 29

29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

We read what happened to the servant who was faithful in using the talent given to him by the Master in verse 29 of our passage. He was given more talents - more auctions - additional grace to serve. This same reward awaits us when we show total faithfulness in our services and stewardship unto God and anywhere we found ourselves..
