TOPIC: YOU ARE A SPECIAL TREASURE

TEXT: Exodus 17:1-8

1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst? 4 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me. 5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not? 8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

INTRODUCTION TEXT

In our passage today, the Bible states why God wondrously and constantly showed grace and mercy to the children of Israel above other nations of the earth. He explained to them through Moses that He had miraculously delivered them from Egypt, the land of bondage. He also emphasized how He took good care of them in the wilderness on account of His love. In clear terms, God desired to have Israel abide by the provisions of His laws and covenant. This would make them a special treasure unto Him above all other nations; they would be His kingdom of priests leading other nations in His worship (vv. 5-6).

Today, we are made to realise that no matter the position we are occupying either in church or society, it is by God's grace; it is not by our own making. We should note that any blessing we receive is purely through God's mercy; it is because He has chosen to bless us and not because of our righteousness or qualifications (I Cor. 1:24-31). More so, as children of God, we are chosen by God to be His special treasure, a holy nation and a kingdom of priests to Him. We are to serve as light to the world. He chooses us, not by merit, but because of His everlasting love. We are therefore expected to be merciful to others, love unconditionally, avoid being judgmental; and strive to please God who has chosen us as His treasure.

Prayer: Lord, help me to live my life as a special treasure; bringing pleasure to you all the time in Jesus' name. Amen.
