TOPIC: Nepotism
TEXTS: Gen. 27:1-10
AIMS:
i. to teach the concept of nepotism as related to both the family and society and
ii. to identify factors responsible for nepotism and effects in society.
INTRODUCTION
Nepotism is the practice of favoring relatives, close-associates, those of the same ethnic group, people who speak the same language and a particular child within the family at the expense of other qualified persons. Isaac and Rebekah had each of their twins - Esau and Jacob - with some partiality or favouritim; and this unfortunately led to a disaster. Jacob gave Joseph a special robe as a mark of his special love for him which led to a gradual disintegration of Jacob’s family in (Gen 37:2-4). What are the consequences of this on the family and society?
STUDY GUIDE
1. In your own understanding, define nepotism in contemporary society especially with regard to Nigeria's rulers and politicians. Support your answers with Gen 47:11-12; 2Sam 19:13 and Matt 20:20-21.
2. Analyze the nepotism in the families of Isaac and Rebekah and Jacob's together with the dire consequences among the children of the families. Gen. 27: 1-10; 37:4, 18-19, 23-24, 32
3. According to James 2:1-4, what can you say are the factors for nepotism? Are such factors in God's Church and Christian homes today? Matt 20:20-21; 1Cor. 3:1-4;
4. In the context of Gal. 2:11-15, how should Christians respond to or handle nepotism attitudes especially in the Church of God? Mention some biblical injunctions for stamping out nepotism. John 7:24;
CONCLUSION
Nepotism has many negative and disruptive consequences in society: anger, hatred, envy, resentment, insecurity and anarchy. Any ruler, whether a leader of a community of a parent at home should avoid the practice of nepotism for peace, joy and love to reign among individuals within the system.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Every Nepotist should remember that no Nepotism in the grave.
