THEME: THE LORD GOD AND THE REIGN OF PEACE

SUB-THEME: Factors for ungodly reign 3

TOPIC: Dearth of God’s word

TEXTS: 1 Sam. 3:1-5

AIMS:

i. to analyze the various Biblical contexts of the dearth of God’s Word and
ii. to expatiate on how the dearth of God’s word can bring about ungodly reign on our land.

INTRODUCTION

The dearth of God’s word is the scarcity of His word. It is the famine of hearing His word - Jeremiah graphically portrayed the most pathetic aspects of the dearth of God’s word like the time of drought: While in Amos time, it was scarcity of hearing or listening to the word of God, in Eli’s time it was the scarcity of the revealed word of God as Eli and his children who had the divine calling had failed. No wonder when God called Samuel, Eli and his sons appeared lost to who could be calling this boy.

STUDY GUIDE

1. Describe the dearth of God’s word in the context of our text today. (1Sam 3:1-5)

2. What factors can cause the dearth of God’s Word? 1Sam 3:1, 8-14; Amos 8:4-7

3. How can the dearth of God’s word cause ungodly reign or leadership? 1Sam 28:5-7; 1Kings 22:5-6.

4. Compare this with proliferation of Churches and pastors in Nigeria.

5. How should every true believer prepare against a famine/dearth of the word of God in their individual life, the church, and the nation? Deut. 6:6-9; Josh. 1:8; 2Tim. 3:15-17; 4:1-5

CONCLUSION

As Christians, let us continue to preach the word of God with the power of the Holy Spirit, because God's word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. It is the bread of life and in it is the spring of living water. When it is scarce, then the land will be thrown into darkness and both the leader and the followers shall continuously stumble.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Where God's Word does not grow, evils and ungodly rulers flourish.

MEMORY VERSE: 2 Tim. 4: 2 “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.”
